Acupuncture uses the precise location of fine needles to relax muscles and take pressure of the spine. Your acupuncturist will use their hands to diagnose disorders of the spine, joints and muscles.
Here at Taunton Acupuncture Clinic, we offer physical therapy as well as acupuncture. Your acupuncturist will also give advice on ergonomics, exercise, and proper body mechanics to prevent back pain.
Due to our Chiropractic background, we will often be able to suggest stretching and strengthening exercises. These will supplement the results that you can achieve with our treatment by teaching you to take good care of yourself between treatment sessions.
• As a pain reliever, ice works really well. It temporarily blocks pain signals but much more importantly, it helps to reduce swelling. Several times a day, place an icepack wrapped in a towel on the painful area for up to 20 minutes.
Alternatively, you can use a bag of frozen peas. During the first few days of home treatment, apply the icepack as often as necessary. Later, you may still want to use ice after exercise or any physical treatment or activity.
• Heat works best to relieve pain when the majority of symptoms are muscluar. If heat only provides a very temporary relief, you are likely to be suffering from a joint sprain rather than a muscular strain.
Most people tend to use a hot water bottle, but the ice / heat packs that are now for sale can be used in the freezer or microwave. Leave it on for up to 20 minutes. You can repeat this three or four times a day for several days.
Our acupuncturists are also fully qualified Chiropractors. Tight, tense muscles that can pull the vertebrae out of alignment can be specifically targeted with acupuncture to allow them to relax. Once the spasm has been reduced, your Doctor of Chiropractic can make gentle corrections to your spine, which can help keep the muscle tension under control. The combination of acupuncture before manipulation also helps your chiropractor to make corrections for you when you are as relaxed as possible.
Your Chiropractor may ask if you are comfortable with acupuncture in conjuction with manipulation for this reason. A multi-treatment approach to relieving back pain has often has the best success rate, which is why patients often benefit from our use of massage or acupuncture, as well as manipultion. It costs no extra to include these treatments within a standard treatment, so please ask your Chiropractor if this approach may help.
